NEUMANN SCHOLARSHIP AND EITC ACT

As of this date Our Lady of the Angels School families will receive $120,000 in tuition assistance from the Neumann Scholarship.  The Educational Improvement Tax Credit Act gives businesses tax credit when they donate money for tuition assistance. Our Lady of the Angels is very fortunate to have this financial support. We thank the following businesses:

Anonymous Donor

Conestoga Title Insurance

Sahd Salvage

Families qualify for this scholarship if

their combined income is $50,000 or less  plus $10,000 for each dependent.

So a family of four will qualify for assistance if their income is $70,000 or

less. If there are families that feel they cannot afford to send their children to Our Lady of the Angels School please share this information or have them contact the school office.

GOLDEN APPLE

I want to thank the children and parents that took the time to nominate an Our Lady of the Angels teacher for this honor. This year there was one teacher nominated:

Mrs. Teri O’Donnell

Mrs. Teri O’Donnell will represent Our Lady of the Angels School at the Diocesan level.

Good Luck Mrs. O’Donnell!

SCIENCE FAIR

This annual event for 7th and 8th graders will be January 30th and January 31st. It will be open for the public on Thursday evening from 6:30PM until 8PM.

HELP NEEDED

Holy Trinity Parish is purchasing new shades for the school building and painting the classrooms. If time permits I would like to clean the inside of the windows before the shades are installed. I do not want to remove the old shades until we have an installation date for the new ones so it may be a tight timeline. If you are willing to bring buckets, rags, ladders (if needed) and help, PLEASE let me know. I will begin a list and then make contact when we can do this job. Thank you in advance for your help.

PROSPECTIVE PARENT NIGHT

On Thursday February 28th there will be an information night for any family interested in sending their children to Our Lady of the Angels. This night will be advertised in the newspapers. You are our best source of information so please share this date with family, friends and business associates.

CALENDAR CHANGE

Talent Show and Volunteer Appreciation will be on Thursday May 22nd. This is a change from the calendar.

STATE POLICE CHECKS

The Diocese has returned some original forms. If you would like yours back please contact Mrs. Diffenderfer at 684-2664 and let her know if you would like it back and we will send it home. If we do not hear from you by February 14th we will shred them. Thank you.

HALL OF FAME INDUCTION AND CELEBRATION

On Saturday January 26th after the 5PM Mass the new members will be inducted into the Our Lady of the Angels Hall of Fame. This year Fr. Josh Brommer and Fr. Chris Sahd will be inducted. We invite you to stop in after Mass for refreshments and to congratulate our inductees. There is no need to stay but just stop by. Students and parents are welcome.

SCHOOL BOARD NOMINATIONS

The form is enclosed and I ask that you give serious consideration to running for a position on the Board. If you have any questions about the position feel free to call or e-mail me. I would also be happy to meet with you to talk about membership on the Board.

Please visit our website at: www.ourladyoftheangels.org

Our students will mark the beginning of Lent by attending Mass and receiving ashes. The children will attend Mass at the respective Churches.

ABSENTEE NOTES

It has been brought to my attention that many parents are neglecting to send in notes when their children return to school. We are required to have notes on file. The student will have two days to bring in a note and then they will make a phone call to their parents. If the note is not returned on the third day, the child will lose recess until the note is brought to school. I feel strongly that we are accountable and therefore these steps must be taken.

LCHS PLACEMENT TEST

On Monday February 25th, our 8th graders will be taking the LCHS placement test. Members of the LCHS faculty will be coming to Our Lady of the Angels to administer the test. All students will be given the test. There is no cost involved.

SPRING CONFERENCES

There is a half day scheduled for conferences on Wednesday April 9th.  Parents or teachers may request conferences at that time. You will be receiving your child’s second grade report on March 14th.  There will be no bus transportation at the 12:30 dismissal  time.

     WELLNESS POLICY

We have adopted a Wellness Policy. This was required by the government because we have the government funded lunch program. I am grateful to Mrs. Livia Riley, Assistant Superintendent and her committee for taking on this responsibility at the Diocesan level. She has asked that all schools in the Diocese adopt the policy. We all want our children to be fit and healthy and this is our initiative to assist parents with this aspect of their child’s life. The policy is to be adopted over a three year period. During this second year we ask that you think healthy when sending food to school. This is especially essential if you are packing your child’s lunch. One simple guideline is that the first ingredient in any food should not be any of the following:

  • Brown sugar         Invert sugar
  • Corn Sweetener    Lactose*
  • Corn Syrup            Maltose*
  • Dextrose                Malt Syrup
  • Fructose *              Molasses
  • Glucose*                Raw Sugar
  • Sucrose                  Sugar
  • High fructose corn syrup
  • Honey                    Syrup

*(naturally occurring will not show up on food ingredient list unless added and will be included as “sugars” listed on the food label)

Let’s try to do what is best for our children.

UNIFORMS

Please take a few minutes and review the uniforms code. I would appreciate your cooperation in following this code. I have noticed slacks that are not appropriate and boys not wearing belts. The maroon sweater with the Our Lady of the Angels logo is the only sweater permitted. The only jewelry permitted is a standard watch (no bells and whistles) and blessed medals.

GlaxoSmithKline

GlaxoSmithKline has donated numerous pieces of equipment for our Science program and we want to thank them and Mr. Scott Haberstroh, who was instrumental in us acquiring this donation. Mr. Haberstroh also shared his time and talent and instructed the teachers on how the various machines are used. This is a great addition to our Science Lab and we look forward to integrating them into the curriculum

IDENT-A-KID

This program will be at our school on Feb. 26 and 27 for those parents wishing their child to participate.  The children will be photographed, weighted, measured and fingerprinted with the information being placed on ID cards for the parents use.  More information will be sent home in February.

MUSICALLY SPEAKING

Musically speaking December was a busy time for our students. On December 12th, the fourth grade under the direction of Mrs. G., entertained for the residents of St. Anne's Home.  After the concert the students visited with the residents. The jubilation choir (5th, 6th and two 7th graders) under the direction of Mrs. G.  performed at the Susquehanna Valley Home.  The residents of both facilities were grateful to the students and invited them back.  The students hope to visit again in the spring for a concert.

The OLA Christmas Concert was enjoyed by all.  The students received many compliments for their performance.

The Fourth Grade Class also sang for the Christmas Luncheon at the Adorers of the Blood of Christ on Columbia Ave Mrs. G accompanied the students. The Sisters sang along with the class on some of the Christmas Songs.  The sisters showed their appreciation by treating the students to cookies and fruit drinks.
