**IMPORTANT**

We have a student that has had a liver transplant and we are very happy to have her with us. After meeting with her parents I felt that I need to share some information with you. I will quote from the letter from the University of Pittsburgh Transplant Institute. “It would be imperative to notify the child’s parents of chicken pox exposure or outbreaks. An exposure is considered to be one hour face to face contact with a child that has a confirmed case of chicken pox.  The child with the liver transplant would have up to 72 hours to be sent to a local emergency room to initiate treatment to help protect the transplant graft.” So please keep the office informed of any contact with a child that has the chicken pox. Thank you in advance for your concern and help.

LUNCH MONEY

Please do not send lunch or milk money  in on a daily basis. You may send it in weekly or monthly. Record keeping can become a nightmare. Also if you have indicated that your child is packing PLEASE be sure that you fulfill this responsibility. It is NEVER our intent to deny a child lunch or embarrass them. You can get a second menu at our website www.ourladyoftheangels.org if you want to keep a record at home.

THANK YOU

NEW SERVER

Last Spring we received a grant from a foundation that wishes to remain anonymous. The money was to be used for technology. We were able to upgrade old technology and integrate some new technology. We were certainly blessed and are extremely grateful to this foundation. With this money we installed a new server and changed our operating system to Windows 2003. New computers were placed in the classrooms. The new technology also includes 5 SMART boards. There is a board on each floor that can be moved. The faculty was in-serviced in August but throughout the year they will be finding out more about how these can be used as another tool for instruction. We were truly blessed and are very grateful.

SPIRIT SALE

Enclosed in this envelope is an order form for some spirit items. We have most of these in stock if you are interested. They are also available in each of the offices. You may just stop by to purchase any of the items.

MIDDLE STATES

As I stated at the back to school night we are beginning the process for Middle State Accreditation. In laymen’s terms this would be very much like the “Good Housekeeping seal of approval”. This is about a two year process. The very first step is forming a Steering Committee which will oversee the entire process. We would like to have this committee in place in October. If you have a desire to be involved in this prestigious endeavor please call me and I will be more than happy to talk with you.

     WELLNESS POLICY

As was stated last year we have adopted a Wellness Policy. This was required by the government because we have the government funded lunch program. I am grateful to Mrs. Livia Riley, Assistant Superintendent and her committee for taking on this responsibility at the Diocesan level. She has asked that all schools in the Diocese adopt the policy. We all want our children to be fit and healthy and this is our initiative to assist parents with this aspect of their child’s’ life. The policy is to be adopted over a three year period. During this first year we ask that you think healthy when sending food to school. This is especially essential if you are packing your child’s lunch. One simple guideline is that the first ingredient in any food should not be any of the following:

  • Brown sugar          Invert sugar
  • Corn Sweetener    Lactose*
  • Corn Syrup            Maltose*
  • Dextrose                Malt Syrup
  • Fructose *              Molasses
  • Glucose*                 Raw Sugar
  • Sucrose                   Sugar
  • High fructose corn syrup
  • Honey                    Syrup

*(naturally occurring will not show up on food ingredient list unless added and will be included as “sugars” listed on the food label)

Let’s try to do what is best for our children.

RELIGION CURRICULUM AND CHASTITY FORMATION

The Diocese has adopted a new Religion curriculum this year. If you are interested you can review the curriculum at the Diocesan website www.hbgdiocese.org  and on the left side go to Religious Education and Diocesan Institute. Then you would go to education and click the area you would like to view. The Chastity Formation curriculum is also listed if you would like to preview it.

GRADE REPORT

I want to thank the parents who made attending the Home and School Assoc. meeting on Tuesday September 12th a priority. We are piloting this grade report and are eager to hear comments and concerns. The most important things for you as a parent to remember is that the Grade Report is only one piece of the Reporting System.

COGNITIVE ABILITY TEST

During the week of October 2nd students in grades 5 and 8 will be taking the Cogat. This is a standardized test that all Diocesan schools administer. The results tell us the abilities of the students not the achievement.

VOLUNTEERS

All volunteers at Our Lady of the Angels School must have the following on file:

  • Signed formed that they viewed the Diocesan video
  • State Police Check
  • Child Line Check
  • TB test results
  • Disclosure Statement

If you would like to volunteer and need any of the above, there will be a meeting on Tuesday October 10th at 7PM at the Primary Building. Mrs. Danielle Kemmerly has graciously volunteered again this year to provide the TB testing. If you have the TB test administered, you will need to return on Thursday October 12th to be checked.

YEARBOOKS

I want to thank Mrs. Spicer for the super job that she did on the yearbook last year. You may want to hold on to the cover, the artist that did it will be famous one day. We do have extra books available if anyone would like to purchase one. The cost is $15.

NO SCHOOL

There is no school on Wednesday September 27th. The teachers will be attending the Diocesan in-service. Also there is no school on Monday October 9th in observance of Columbus Day.

EARRINGS

Students are not to wear jewelry when participating in gym class. We do understand that some girls may have just had their ears pierced and there are questions that are coming up. I ask that if this situation arises, the parent write a note indicating when the child will be able to remove the earrings and that you release the school from all responsibility resulting in injuries that may occur with respect to wearing the earrings. I hope this will answer the questions that have been asked. Girls are only permitted to wear one pair of earrings and that is one in each ear.
